What is Winter Guard? Winter guard (or indoor color guard) is an amazing new form of dance that is becoming very popular in North America. Color guard is an activity in the “marching arts” family. Marching arts generally consist of drum corps, marching bands, horn lines, drum lines, color guards and percussion groups. Color guard is an activity that looks like a dance group but with a major twist. It is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. It merges theatre, dance and the joy of performance with equipment spinning and flying through the air. Color guards can be found all over the world in high schools, middle schools, universities, and also independent organizations some of which are related to drum corps and marching bands. Winter guard is the competitive sport of indoor color guard. It is organized and promoted by Winter Guard International (www.wgi.org). Winter guard shows are performed indoors in an arena or gym setting and are performed to pre-recorded music. There is a competition season that begins in January and ends with the Winter Guard Championships in April of each year. |
